The Data Doesn't Lie: Why Google's "People Also Ask" is a Black Hole of Misinformation
Google's "People Also Ask" (PAA) box—that ever-expanding list of related questions that pops up in search results—is supposed to be helpful. But is it really helping, or is it just another way for misinformation to spread? As a former data analyst, I decided to dive into the numbers (or, rather, the lack thereof) and see what's really going on.
The premise is simple: Google analyzes search queries and tries to anticipate what other questions users might have. Sounds efficient, right? But the algorithm is essentially a popularity contest. The more a question is asked, the more likely it is to appear in the PAA box, regardless of whether the answer is accurate or even based in reality. That's where the problems begin.
The Echo Chamber Effect
The PAA box creates an echo chamber. If a false or misleading question gains traction, it gets amplified. People see it in the PAA box, assume it's a legitimate concern, and search for it, further validating its presence. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy of misinformation. And this is the part of the report that I find genuinely puzzling: Google has access to more data than almost any other entity on the planet. Why is it so difficult for them to filter out clearly false or misleading information from the PAA results?

The algorithm seems to prioritize engagement (clicks, time on page, etc.) over accuracy. This is a common problem with many algorithms, but it’s particularly dangerous in the context of search results. People are actively seeking information, and they're likely to trust what Google presents to them, even if it's wrong.
The Problem With "Related Searches"
Then there are the "Related Searches" at the bottom of the page. These are supposed to help you refine your search, but often they lead down rabbit holes of conspiracy theories and misinformation. I've looked at hundreds of these results pages, and this particular pattern is alarming. For example, search for something relatively innocuous, like "health benefits of green tea," and you might find "related searches" for "green tea detox scam" or "green tea side effects conspiracy."
It's not that these related searches are always wrong, but they introduce doubt and uncertainty where it might not be warranted. The algorithm seems to be designed to maximize clicks, even if it means leading people astray. Is Google's goal to provide accurate information, or to keep people engaged on their platform for as long as possible? The data suggests the latter.
So, What's the Real Story?
Google's "People Also Ask" and "Related Searches" are not the objective sources of information they appear to be. They're driven by algorithms that prioritize engagement over accuracy, creating echo chambers of misinformation. Until Google addresses this fundamental flaw, these features should be approached with extreme skepticism. The acquisition cost of truth is high, but the cost of misinformation is even higher.
